What are GMOs and why do agroecologists fight against them? A summary of the relevant aspects of this discussion.


For several years now, there has been a heated debate about genetically modified crops in Latin America. Countries such as Colombia, Chile and Mexico have given in to their introduction and cultivation, others such as Costa Rica are creating territories free of genetically modified crops at the request of the population, while Peru remains legally free of genetically modified seeds. Ecuador, through a veto by former President Rafael Correa to which the parliamentary majority of the ruling party was subjected, has just accepted the introduction of genetically modified seeds and crops “for research purposes only.” This debate is once again taking place behind the backs of the population, which is the one that should decide on a decision that can deeply affect its economy and food supply.
